The story follows a family of foreign exchange students from India, who, after spending time at the U.S. Embassy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, can’t return to their home country. They get lost on their way back to New Delhi and wind up in Calcutta before finally reuniting with their parents in New Delhi nine months later only to find that they cannot go back to school because they missed too much of the term and must live with an aunt and uncle for a few weeks while catching up on school work and preparing for exams. The film examines how their experiences of living in the United States are reflected in their attitudes toward work, relationships, religion, music and family life. "The Arrival" was produced by BBC Films India with BBC Worldwide funding. BBC Films India set up its first international coproduction with BBC Worldwide for this film which has been backed by BBC Films World Sales. Production began on location in early September 2008 with principal photography lasting until August 2009. The film was released theatrically in India on 25 April 2010 to critical acclaim. BBC Worldwide distributed the film to international markets including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia on 22 October 2010. The film is a modern adaptation of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, one of the central works in his novel "Ulysses". The film was shot entirely in Hindi. A Hindi version titled "Langda" was released on 26 June 2010. A Telugu dubbed version titled "Adhayam" was released on 25 December 2011.In late 2008, BBC Films India signed a long-term agreement with Escotet Productions B.V., an Amsterdam-based production and distribution company that specializes in films made entirely or partially in languages not available to broadcasters or video stores in their original country of origin. Escotet Productions B.V. produced and distributed "The Arrival" outside India, entering into a co-production agreement with BBC Worldwide's Global Acquisitions group; all rights were handled by Escotet Productions B.V., who also served as the international sales agent for the film. Escotet was responsible for all international sales and distribution, including theatrical, television broadcast and home entertainment markets. BBC Worldwide handled all global distribution for the DVD/DI; they also took care of all TVC viewing copies for broadcasters across the world, containing English audio tracks to be subtitled in each market’s respective language. The film was released on DVD in April 2011 in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. Critical response to "The Arrival" has been positive. BBC Films India was nominated for Best Feature Film in their very first feature film at the 57th National Awards in 2010. The film won several awards in India including the Best First Film of a Director at the 54th National Film Awards, Best Cinematography at the 56th National Film Awards, and three awards for best debut film at the 2009 Screen Weekly Awards.
